#69: I am woman, hear (my engine) roar

May 19, 2009

A truly awesome photo of a truly awe inspiring lady from Shorpy with the attached description: September 15, 1937. “First of fair sex to obtain motorcycle license in Capital. Although she weighs only 88 pounds — one-third of the machine she rides, Mrs. Sally Halterman is the first woman to be granted a license to operate a motorcycle in the District of Columbia. She is 27 years old and 4 feet, 11 inches tall. Immediately after receiving her permit, Mrs. Halterman was initiated into the D.C. Motorcycle Club — the only girl ever to be accorded this honor.”

Go, girl.

The Antique Motorcycle Club of America is puttin’ on the ritz the second weekend in June and I’m , as they say, pumped up– The Antique Motorcycle Show & Swap Meet is happening June 12-14th. It’s an optimum weekend to get out of the city and sojourn up North, New Yorkers, because our favorite little nearby river town and antiquing hotspot is simultaneously hosting its annual Antiques Show on Sunday, June 14. (Gotta love these hi-fi pre-historic websites.) Mark your calendars!

I loved the black and white pictures of Williamsburg in Brooklyn. I was born in Brooklyn, NY. And lived for a short time in the Kings neighborhood. I still want to go back to New York, but that will probably be in the future. How do you manage to go to New Mexico? Always loved it there. I live in Southern California, with my husband, daughter, two cats and a dog. Love American Indian jewelry, and western wear. Still looking for a pair of great boots.
