#90: Summer Soundtrack V

August 27, 2009

The clock is ticking on my Summer Soundtrack!  While we can and ought to listen to these songs the year round, I think we all know that the feeling we get from them on these hot and hazy days and nights takes us much farther and deeper, and closer to where we want to be.

On loop: Mickey “Guitar” Baker and Sylvia Vanderpool Robinson, a.k.a. Mickey & Sylvia.  Mickey was a legendary studio musician, and also a music teacher.  Sylvia was a session vocalist and one of his students.  With a couple of matching Les Pauls, these two delivered a new sound to all the young bloods looking for the soundtrack to their summer lovin’.

What other gal was weilding an electric ax in 1957!?  Sweet-as-honey pipes, knows how to shred: the perfect woman.

Dedicated to all you summer lovers out there.

That’s the same Sylvia Robinson who later on founded the record label Sugar Hill, famous in the early hiphop era. She also was responsible for Sugar Hill Hang, so she should be seen als the mother of hip hop. Wow!
