#145: Hang Fire – Weekend Fun

November 1, 2010

Weekend fun: building a fire pit, or, stranded without a car with nothing else to do and very little knowhow.  Here we go.

Dig a pit!  Any digging apparatus one might use can be substituted for sweeping motions of the leg and a hiking boot.  Extremely effective (on opposite day).

Gather rocks and create a perimeter.  Hold quiet yet brazen funeral services for any dead salamanders found under said rocks.

Grab the camera and admire your determination and enterprise.  Wipe your brow.  Envision the campfire and the imminent glory…

Next, forage for wood wimpy twigs.

Now, harness that fire within and your campfire will materialize.

It’s all very easy from here.  Gather close to the flame and marvel at its hypnotic beauty.  Challenge yourself to find a comfy spot while smoke gets in your eyes from every possible angle.  Hold back tears.  Eat a Lara Bar.  Attempt confidence when a deer hunter stumbles across you sitting in front of a tiny pile of burning sticks eating a kale salad that you packed in your bag.  Grumble as you realize that a campfire is only fun when a) it’s dark out; and b) you are with other humans.  Pour contents of canteen on burning flame, listen to it hiss and die.  Trek home satisfied because YOU – ARE – OUTDOORSY (or you try, anyway, and that’s what matters).  Turn on HBO On Demand and put your feet up, you deserve it.
